For the most part, we found that most places in Italy are dog-friendly and welcome pets.

Italy has many places to visit, from small towns to big cities. Here’s a summary of the places we visited and our thoughts on how pet-friendly they are.

Bologna is a beautiful city in the north of the country, famous for its gastronomy and red-brick city center. We see many dining establishments that welcome pets. The food in Bologna is exceptional and the meals are delicious. However, as usual in many cities, tourist attractions such as churches and museums, like most places, are pet-only. My favorite spots include the Campanile, Piazza Maggiore and Portico Bologna.

Visiting the ruins of Pompeii is a bucket list trip of mine. Pompeii is located in southern Italy and is easily accessible by train. The ruins of Pompeii are well worth a visit and contain some well-preserved buildings. The site is huge and it might take a full day to browse everything. Apart from the ruins and the main town square, there isn’t much else to see in the city, which is probably why many people only come as a day trip. The nearby Mount Vesuvius towers over the horizon and is a beautiful sight, especially at sunset.

Visit Europe With A Dog

We saw bars and restaurants that allowed dog guests. Finding pet-friendly accommodation is easy and there are many options. The biggest downside to Pompeii is that stray dogs are not very friendly, and I was annoyed by the large number of unsociable dogs in the area. This is not a place we will return to with Harry.
