I’ve walked dogs in the Bay Area all my life. Growing up in Silicon Valley, I walked many dog-friendly trails with my family as a child. From Windy Hill in Portola Valley to Arastrader Nature Reserve in Palo Alto, we love the great outdoors with our great standard poodles.
As an adult, I’ve done all the hikes on this list with my friend Minnie Goldendoodle. From the North Sea to the peninsula we pushed a lot. This list contains my favorites. The pup loves them as much as I do, and we can both recommend them from personal experience (although I’m more vocal about them than he is!).

Cataract Falls is one of the most popular waterfall hikes in Marin County and the Bay Area. Cataract Creek features a narrow forest trail that includes a series of small waterfalls.

A moderately challenging course, it involves walking over uneven stone steps and narrow footbridges and a fair amount of elevation gain. If you go after a heavy rain (which is when the waterfalls are at their best), that means dirty palms (and possibly dirty everything) for your child.
The hike to Cataract Falls can be a U-turn or a circle. The first is at 3 miles on the Cataract Trail (1.5 miles each way). We are talking about an elevation gain of approximately 1,055 feet.

Walking time depends on your fitness level and how fast you and your dog want to run. The 3 mile hike takes 2 to 3 hours and the 7.5 mile loop takes 3.5 to 5 hours. If you are in good shape, you can do it quickly. If your dog walks slowly, it may take longer.

You can do this trip at any time of the year, but since the waterfall is the main attraction, it is best to do it after heavy rains. In Marin County, that usually means the winter months. If you time your hike during stormy weather, you will be able to see the falls better.
On our list of the best dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area is Montora Mountain. Bordering McNee Ranch State Park and San Pedro Valley County Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this peak is an ideal destination for outdoor recreation in San Mateo County, California.
The mountain rises 1,898 feet above sea level. There are hiking trails nearby that lead to North Peak and other places in and around Mantara State Beach. It’s a great day trip from San Francisco.
Mount Mantara is located south of the Pacific Ocean. It covers 690 acres and is open from 8 am to sunset. There are various walks available here, all suitable for dogs. They vary in distance and difficulty, so there is an option for every fitness level.
Dog Friendly Hikes In The Bay Area
If you want an easy hike, the 1 mile Gray Whale Cove Trail is your best bet. It takes you from Gray Whale Cove State Beach to Mantara State Beach and Highway 1.
After a short hill at the beginning, the road is relatively flat and has panoramic views of the coast. The road is right on the beach, so you can admire the view of the ocean along the way.
If you and your dog want something more challenging, you can start on the Gray Whale Cove Trail and continue on the North Peak Access Trail or the Old San Pedro Mountain Trail. Both involve gradual ascents, so are more difficult (but not too difficult) than the Gray Whale Bay route.
The first is a fire road, so it is a wide open road. The hike is 3.9 miles each way and takes you to the summit of Mount Montara. From the top you can admire the beautiful view of the beach and the entire coastal area.

The latter has more twists but is a good option. The trail heads towards the Pacific, crossing the North Peak Access Road and meeting for a while. If you want, you can switch to the road to reach the north end. It is 3.2 kilometers one way.
Finally, the Mantara Mountain Trail is a relatively challenging route from San Pedro Valley County Park to the North Peak Access Trail. From there you can follow the path to the top of the mountain. It is 2.1 kilometers one way.

Next on my list of dog-friendly bay walks is the Oakwood Valley Trail. This moderately challenging hike is perfect if you and your canine companion want to get outside in Marin County.

The trail is dog-friendly and not as steep as others in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, so it’s perfect if you want to go for a walk in the woods.
Oakwood Valley is located north of Cape Marin. The largest oak and laurel forest in the Golden Gate National Parks is located here. More than 500 species of plants grow here, in the surrounding meadows and mixed forests.
Oakwood Valley Trail is 2.58 miles round trip. It is relatively flat at the beginning and end, and the hilly section in the middle has many steps.
This is because the hike is part loop trail and part loop trail. It starts on Oakwood Plains singletrack and then joins the Oakwood Valley Trail (sometimes called the Fire Road Trail). From there it goes to the trail where it joins the Alta Trail.

Oakwood Valley Road crosses Tennessee Valley Road next to Oakwood Plains Trail, so when you reach the end of the road you have to walk a short distance to get back to your car.
The hike starts at an elevation of 33 feet and reaches an elevation of 621 feet at its highest point. Most of the reinforcement is in the outer and back section of the center, so if you and your dog want an even walk, you can skip that section and cycle.
The road is well maintained and well marked, so it is easy to follow.
