If you’re like us, you love taking things with you on trips. Last September we took one of the most amazing trips to beautiful Utah with our two pups, Newton and Maya. I thought I’d write a little blog series about our adventure (this is part I and part II) and hopefully give you some useful tips if you’re traveling with your dogs.
There are two main factors to consider in Utah: (1) weather + (2) crowds. As this is a major tourist destination, it does get crowded in the warmer months, so keep that in mind. Plus, Utah has HAWT during the summer. This may not be ideal for you and your puppy. We decided to go in mid-September, which worked out well for us. There were still crowds, but not as large as in June, July or August. Although it was still warm and hot at times, it wasn’t the scorching heat of summer. Can we make a pot? Maybe. But we also didn’t want it to be too cold, so going at the end of September, beginning of October might be a good compromise.
Are you ready to travel with your dog? You’ve probably done this before (thank you!), but this is probably your first long-distance trip and you’re probably a little nervous. Here is some information to help you prepare. First, make a list of your dog’s daily needs…

Now let’s get to the good stuff… Where to go in Utah? It was very difficult for us to choose one area. If you’ve ever explored Utah, you know that the state is home to some amazing parks and trails. You’ll want to see Arches and Canyonlands in Moab to the east, but you’ll also want to do Zion National Park and see all the gorgeous slot canyons in southwestern/southcentral Utah’s desert. Utah has a lot to offer, and if you’re traveling from both sides of the country, you’ve already come a long way, so you might as well come and see it all! [PS: We also didn’t make it to Arizona’s epic Monument Valley, which isn’t far at all and would have been an easy addition with an extra day or two, but alas…next time!]
We decided to go for a week (5 nights and 6 days to be exact) to see as much as possible. Planning such a big trip can be overwhelming, but with a little (actually a lot) of research, planning, enthusiasm, and motivation, you can do it! I hope this blog helps you with your planning. Here’s how we broke it down.
British Columbia — Hike With Your Dog
Our starting point was being home in Denver, Colorado. We decided to include Moab and Zion in our trip, even though they were over 4 hours away and on opposite ends of the state. It made sense to visit Zion first because it’s the furthest (over 9.5 hours from Den) and there are some great slot canyons on the way back from Zion to Moab that we also wanted to see, so that was the plan. We began our week-long journey at Uranus in Utica, just 35 minutes from Zion. We then spent two nights there before heading towards Moab. On the way to Moab, we stopped in Kanab in the Utah desert, where you’ll find stunning, dog-friendly slot canyons. This ride also took us to parts of Arizona, including Lake Powell (which looks amazing and is definitely on our list for our next adventure). We eventually arrived in Moab, where we spent the rest of the trip and a total of 3 nights. At the end of the weekend it was an easy and scenic 5 hour drive home. Overall, I think the approach we planned was the best fit for what we were doing. You can customize, add, remove and schedule depending on where you’re from, how much time you have and what you want to see. (If you’re short on time, I recommend doing the whole thing in Moab). Here’s a little about the first two legs of our trip: Zion and Slot Canyon in the Utah desert. [We will soon create a separate blog about Moab!]
After a grueling 9.5-hour drive from Denver to Hurricane (with plenty of snacks and potlucks), we arrived at the most unique Cabin A at Uranus in Utica, about an hour from Zion National Park. Just check out the views here! The first day was a good one as we were tired and just wanted to relax and see the amazing views from our Airbnb. Hurricane is a small town, but check out the Main Street Café for some great bands.
Just 50 minutes away from an unexpected and (to us) unplanned natural wonder… Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park! We didn’t know about this park before the storm, and it was so close that we went there. Oh, was it worth it… I had never seen pink sand, it was amazing! Plus, as a state park, it’s dog friendly, which was the best thing for us! Plus, since it’s not very popular, you don’t have to fight the crowds. Coral Pink Sand Dunes are located south and west of U.S. Highway 89 in Kane County, between Mount Carmel Junction and Kanab.
