Even though I live in the hustle and bustle of the city, I want to escape to the forest for a nice walk to clear my mind. Fortunately, many of the wooded areas and trails around Chicago are dog-friendly. Over the years, we’ve found the best places to board dogs in the Chicago area.

Is Your Dog Allowed On Chicago Beaches?
This is a popular walk in Chicago, so if you can walk on a weekday, I recommend avoiding the weekend crowds.
Starved Rock is a great place in any season! Winter brings snowfall and eagles to the river. Spring boats, flowing waterfalls and blooming forests. And fall offers beautiful fall colors on the trees.
There are plenty of routes to choose from and plenty of ’round trips’ from the accommodation, so you can turn around whenever you want. The Sandstone Point & Overlook Trail takes you to several canyons via a variety of trails, boardwalks and passes. And there are often plenty of places for your child to splash around in streams and ponds.
Up north, Deer Grove Forest Preserve is one of my favorite dog hikes near Chicago. Once you’re in the woods, you won’t believe how close you are to the nearest commercial areas.
Bring Your Best Friend On These Pet Friendly Vacations In Michigan
Conveniently located off Dundee Road in Palatine, the trail is easily accessible from several parking lots and has well-marked connecting trails.
For a long hike in the Chicago area, check out Waterfall Glen southwest of Darien. At 9.5 miles, it’s the longest trail I know of in the area, and many people come here to train for long walks. The crushed stone path passes several streams and several waterfalls.
You may be wondering why a dog park is listed as dog-friendly, but Lakewood Dog Park in northwest Wauconda is a great place for off-leash walks.
After leaving the wide fields where many dogs and their people roam, you can enter the forest paths. The area of the park is 66 hectares, so there is a lot of space to explore!
Pet Friendly Lodging
For a friendly urban “trip” in Chicago, the Lakefront Trail is the best choice. There are 18 miles of trails along the shores of Lake Michigan where you can walk, run, bike or skate. I love the stretch south from Oak Street Beach (shown below) to the museum campus, which offers panoramic views of the city.
There are parks and cafes along the way, so you can turn this sightseeing into an all-day event. Just a short walk from the route, Navy Pier, Lincoln Park and Grant Park offer different views of Chicago.

Indiana Dunes National Park: Looking for a weekend getaway? Dunes National Park is about an hour from Chicago. Camping is a great way to get outdoors and de-stress. The Dunes is a dog-friendly place, but there are a few rules you should check before you go.
