Because we really value sleeping comfort, we don’t want a floor plan with a couch that leans against the bed. There is no way that all these shields will form the same surface. We don’t like wasting storage for a bed or making the bed every night. For a long time we thought we’d go for the Travato 59G with a sunken corner bed: it has a great floor plan for storing things under the bed, while making the rear door usable. This is due to details like the 2019 model moving away from the propane cooler – a detail I really like (Tommi).
Reading other people’s experiences with the 59G finally convinced us that the corner bed was not for us. It’s too tall for our dog to jump on her own, and too heavy for our dog to lift regularly (I’ve had to carry our 65kg Lily to get into a lifted Jeep, enough). If you only have a round sized pet, it will look very different. For us, even if we always force the dog to sleep on the floor, they will probably pile up at the bottom, where you have to slide off the high bed, and a lot of tails will be stepped on. And with our latest addition, we now have three dogs in the 50-65 lb range; they take up a lot of space, and at least one of them is there.
With all of the above in mind, we ended up wanting a layout with a double bed and a corridor in the middle, even if it meant opening the rear door ridiculously straight to the pooper.
Most vans with double beds convert into a large bed by attaching a table top in the middle, but I doubt we’ll ever do that. We like to keep our nightly routine short and simple, just like our arrival/departure routine.

We found a used one for 59K with some options we really like: heated tank and sunroof. A tank heater (“heated drain” in Winnebago terminology) helps in the winter, and the 2019 Travato’s fresh water plumbing is already part of the equipment, protecting it from freezing. Awning windows allow the window to be opened even in rain, and can be securely locked while still slightly open. Likewise, the Travato ceiling fan has a rain cover and can be operated in the rain. A quick 1,300 mile drive later, we now have a van, and the dog is slowly getting to know her. Through experience we begin to provide answers to some of our open questions.
