Located in Montauk, New York, Shedmore State Park is a great getaway for you and your furry friend. About three hours outside of New York City by car, this state park has beach access, hiking trails and observation decks. Dogs must be supervised at all times but can swim on the beach and swim in the ocean in water deeper than six feet. Bring your picnic blanket and basket and spend the day on the sand, bird watching or taking in the beautiful scenery.

An easy drive from New York City, Rockaway Beach has the city’s only legal surfing beach, a boardwalk and many restaurants. Dogs are not allowed on the sand or boardwalk from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but are visited during the holidays when crowds are less and temperatures are slightly cooler. After a long day of letting your dog explore the ocean and play in the sand, head to the dog-friendly Rockaway Beach Surf Club for tacos and drinks. Rockaway Beach is easily accessible year-round by car, subway and ferry.

Dog Beach is located north of Long Meadow Wall Parks and can be accessed by subway and car.

It’s time for a road trip. Jump in the car and take the two-hour drive to Gardiner County Park on Long Island Beach. This public park offers trails that wind through lakes and forests and is a great retreat to explore nature with your pets. Dogs must be on a lead but Great South Bay has plenty of trails to explore, a dog water fountain and a small beach.

Ready to head to the beach? Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area in Manasquan, New Jersey is a great place for some quiet time with Fido. The eastern part of the area is considered a dog beach and allows your four-legged friend to swim in the water and relax on the sand. Dogs must be on a lead to protect the beach resort, but that won’t stop them from enjoying the sun. Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area is an hour and a half from New York City and close to many other restaurants, bars and beaches.

Catch a glimpse of the famous hurricane and grab a hot dog at the famous Nathan’s Store while enjoying Coney Island beach time. Since dogs are not allowed on the beach during the summer months, you need to get there between October and May to enjoy the three miles of sandy beach. All dogs must be on a leash and cannot swim in the water but can be walked on the boardwalk year round. Take a quick hour and a half hour subway ride from New York City to enjoy what Coney Island has to offer.

About a two and a half hour drive from New York City, Wildwood Dog Park and the beach are definitely worth the trip to New Jersey. Your dog can run in two fenced areas, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. The park is about two blocks long and dogs are welcome year-round to bathe in the water or laze on the sand. If you want water and sand to rule your bucket list, this is the place to visit.

If you’re looking for a break from the city, a trip to a dog-friendly beach in New England is the perfect escape. Located on Long Island Sound in Madison, Connecticut, Hammonsett Beach State Park offers two miles of beach fun. Dogs are welcome on the Strip all year round, except on the beach where they are only seen between November and April. Hop in the car with your child for a two-hour drive to explore this quaint Connecticut beach.

Plumb Beach is a small beach located near the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, a great place to spend a relaxing day with your best friend. Near Sheepshead Bay, this beach allows dogs year-round, but they must be on a lead. Avoid the crowds at other area beaches and head here for a quick trip from the city by car or subway and bus.
