Thanks for the question! Bringing your dog to Costa Rica means you must comply with the country’s pet import requirements. You can find an overview of that information by the USDA here. As you can see, you need a health certificate, a rabies certificate, and your dog must be vaccinated against rabies.

You need to book flights with a pet-friendly airline (we often use United to fly pets from the United States to Costa Rica) and make sure you have the right travel crate.

To return to the United States, you should review and ensure compliance with these requirements for importing pets. Interestingly, you must obtain a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel to prove once again to the airline that your dog is healthy and fit to fly.
If you can handle the time and expense of traveling with your dog (which can run into the hundreds of dollars over two trips) and you think your dog will enjoy the experience without too much stress. , then you can bring him/her with you.
When faced with such a short trip, many pet owners choose to leave their pets at home with a trusted companion rather than go through the effort of international travel. In most cases, a dog is better off staying at home in a familiar environment than spending hours on a plane.

That means her insulin, medicine, supplements, potty pads, different bowls, special diabetic kibble, extra syringes for chicken and veggie stew, treats, toys, her harness and leash, her doggy bag, dog shampoo and towels. .

I think most dogs love driving cars, but especially Daisy. I don’t know what it is, but it’s a big scary cat! Here are some things I do to make our rides more comfortable and enjoyable:
Now, this has nothing to do with car rides, but it’s important enough for me to share. Before you start—haha, get it—in your dogage, research pet ERs ahead of time. God forbid something happens to your Furby, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. I always make sure I have the contact details of my nearest clinic in case of emergency and suggest you do the same.
On a lighter note, Vacasa sent me a box of summer travel essentials and I wanted to show off my new swag. Here’s what I got: a new baseball cap, travel journal + pen, new water bottle with reusable straw (!!!!!), luggage tags, and laptop case. I was excited… but I think Daisy was more excited than me.

A recent study showed that 37% of dog owners don’t travel because they don’t want to leave their fur babies behind. The thought of leaving your baby behind can be upsetting and guilt-inducing, but adopting a pet doesn’t mean you have to put your life on hold and book a trip.
While many people choose to research dog-friendly hotels and plan their trip to take their pup, this isn’t always an option for some families. Sudden changes of location and long car rides can cause furbabies with restless personalities. International travel makes bringing a dog even more difficult. In light of this, the Pets A Go Go team have shared their top tips for making sure your pet is well looked after while you’re on holiday, because you deserve a carefree trip.
Establish a care plan. Before you book a trip, make sure your favorite pet is available while you’re away. Once this is established, invite this person into your home before you leave to learn more about your dog’s routine and build trust between you and your pet. Seeing a familiar face when you’re far away helps dogs adjust to not being close. Write a checklist detailing your pet’s feeding plan, any medical restrictions, and a phone number for your veterinarian in case of an emergency.
The Good, The Bad, And The Real Of Traveling With A Dog
Invest in pet-friendly technology. Just because you’re outdoorsy doesn’t mean you can’t interact with your pet! There are now many indoor camera options designed with pet owners in mind. Not only do these cameras allow you to see what your pet has, they also allow you to talk to your pet through speakers, and some even allow you to feed them via an app!
Update your dog’s tags and microchip. If you live in an apartment or house without a fence, there is an unfortunate chance that your pet will get loose, especially if your dog is used to only listening to your commands. It’s important to make sure your pup’s ID tags are displayed on their collars and their microchips are up-to-date, so the good guys know where your pups are if they’re found.
“Puppy Proof” your home. Just as you make sure your home is safe for a teething puppy, you should do the same for any dog that is left alone for long periods of time or feels stressed from being away from you. Chewing is a result of separation anxiety, so it’s important to keep anything dangerous out of your puppy’s reach to prevent health risks and damage to your belongings.
Consider boarding your dog. One of the surest ways to make sure your dog is safe while you’re away is to leave them to a pet care professional. This allows your dog constant attention from loving staff and the company of other playful dogs. There will also be some boarding facilities on a regular basis
