One of our favorite (and free!) places to go when you’re not socializing is the library! There are stories or events you can sign up for, but there are usually playgrounds open for kids all the time. With a 7 year gap between my oldest and youngest, I want each child to have something to do and I can find a cool place to read or do work at the same time! What do you do when the weather is not suitable for outdoor dancing? Share in the comments below! The Denver metro area is home to more than 750 public playgrounds, from small to large and old to new. Finding the best one is necessary to visit each playground, a project I completed in 2018 with my two children in tow. Our goal was to find every playground in more than 20 cities in Denver, photograph and evaluate each according to certain criteria: variety of equipment, accessible parks and educational activities. I’ve listed everything we found in the Denver Playgrounds & Parks guide and app.
Here are 10 playgrounds that stand out from the crowd. Even if you live far away, they are all worth a visit if you want to try something new. Happy browsing!
Colorado Mills Mall
Lakewood’s largest playground was installed in 2017. Carmody Park has everything a modern playground has to offer. There are two swings (for one adult and one child), a carousel and a rocking boat. You’ll find climbing challenges for all abilities, including nets, rocks, logs and ladders. Don’t miss the large selection of musical instruments, the giant sandbox and various outdoor fitness equipment. With eight crosses and nine slides, there is enough room for everyone. It’s also an accessible playground: wheelchair ramps, rubber surfaces and flexible turnstiles mean people of all abilities are welcome.
Built in 2018 and named after former national team player and radio host Paco Sanchez, this playground will entertain for hours. Many different play options include a 30-foot indoor climbing tower, rubber hills and a super-fast concrete slide. Don’t miss the hangover – it can pull insiders into the air if you’re timing it. Or climb to the top of the tower and slide all the way inside. Climbing ropes, nets and spirals abound. There are also many swings, spring toys and sinkholes.
Built in 2014, this playground is like a deep forest. Trunks, trees, mushrooms and reds are everywhere, and dark greens and browns dominate. The colorful playground is almost as big as the playground itself and makes summer days even more fun. Try the water slide – only eight other Denver playgrounds have one. The park also offers a river, a memorial garden and a large picnic area.
Renovated and renewed in 2019, this playground has a large number of devices for playing in a small space, both mountain and sea. You’ll find climbing frames, two-person jumps, four-person seesaws, and musical instruments. There are two slides, one uphill and one horizontal, similar to an airplane baggage lane. The most accessible features include stepless wheelchairs, adaptive swings and ramps.
Best Ski Resorts In Colorado For Beginners
This large playground is a free playground that offers families a break while visiting the Denver Premium Outlets Mall. The playground was installed in 2018 and is open to the public, even if you are not shopping. Super slides, unique climbing towers and huge nets dominate the arena. Bridges, tunnels and clubhouse-like platforms are scattered throughout. Explore the dinosaur area, climbing ropes and lawns.
This southern underground playground was built in 2012 and boasts the largest splash area in the city, a large climbing net, a treehouse, an activity level and a children’s area with slides, swings, a sandbox and climbing structures. Have a picnic in the spacious pavilion and enjoy the beautiful view of the mountain.
This mega-playground in Thornton was built in 2013. In addition to 10 swings, eight slides and six merry-go-rounds, the playground includes a merry-go-round, a rocking boat and slides. The splash pad has a spout and fountains that light up at night, and there’s also a skate park nearby. During the summer weekends, there is a possibility to rent pedal boats on the nearby lake, as well as a full-size carousel (for a fee).
This unique playground in Broomfield is made mostly of wood and has many climbing structures, tunnels, bridges, slides, trees and hills. The park also offers a swimming pool, bike park and fitness track. It was built in 2018.

The 8,000-square-foot playground at this southeast Aurora park opened last August, inviting kids of all abilities to play together. In addition to a splash pad and access to the Piney Creek Trail, the new inclusive playground features a wheelchair-accessible swing and carousel, a sensory garden, an adjustable zipline, an accessible slide and other sensory features.
The renovated 40-acre Del Mar Park opened in 2015 with a water park, ball fields and a new playground. Five types of spinners (including a unique platform spinner) and plenty of climbing options await you. Let your kids try the white ladder madness. In the summer, shelter is provided by canopies in the shade. It is close to the waters, which is convenient for visiting.
