Dogs are allowed in all parks. However, state law prohibits pets in swimming areas and requires pets to be confined or on a leash no longer than six feet and supervised when in the park.
All beaches classified as “swimming areas” are dog-free. If there is a lake or body of water in the park, swimming is not allowed and may be supervised by park staff.
Other shorelines than swimming beaches allow dog swimming. This is often the case in coastal parks, especially in the Tidewater park area.

Take your dog to York River State Park in Williamsburg today for a playdate. Stroll along the river’s dog path, but keep your pet on a leash under six feet. Pets are not allowed to swim at this beach.
From April 1 through Labor Day, dogs are allowed on the beach before 9:00 AM and after 9:00 PM. However, take your child to Cape Charles Beach anytime from September to April.
This resort has a dog park as well as a dog park with play structures and water features. Sandy Paws Dog Beach is a beachfront area, just remember to accompany your pup at all times!
Haven Beach on the Chesapeake Bay welcomes all dogs to its beach! The beach has a sandy bottom, a swimming area and plenty of parking. Make sure your child stays on the leash!
Dog Friendly Activities And Places In Arlington, Va
This state park allows your furry friends, just as long as they are on a leash less than six feet long. Here, Aquia Creek meets the Potomac River, and Widewater provides access to both bodies of water. The garden is located on an adjoining property and is open to the public. Remember that it is not possible to swim, but enjoy walking along the river!
You and your child can enjoy the popular beach on the Potomac River and even take a dip in the water together! Just make sure your dog is well behaved.
Take your four-legged friend to Lake Mooney in Stafford County. There is no swimming here, but the small beach is the best place to spend the sun outdoors.
Your four-legged friends can stay on the beach at Colonial Beach anytime from October 1st through March 31st. Dogs are not allowed on Colonial Beach from April to September. They must also be on a leash at all times.

Your furry friend is welcome on the sand at Leesylvania State Park as long as they are at least six feet tall and are always accompanied by a human companion.
Visit Sun Outdoors Chesapeake Bay with your dog in tow! This campground has a pet-friendly beach and even allows pets on a leash on the beach as long as everyone is accompanied.
Although dogs are not allowed on the “Bear Creek Lake State Park Swimming Beach,” the park does have an area of the beach marked as dog-friendly. Your dog must be on a leash but is welcome to enjoy the sand. Your child can also join you on the park’s charter boat, as long as everyone behaves!
If you rent a pet-friendly vacation home on a private beach on the East Coast or along the Chesapeake Bay, you can vacation with your dogs without worrying about public beach restrictions. Enjoy the sun, sand and surf with your dog this summer! We travel as often as we can with our puppy. We love it. We joke that we are going to have a baby one day. Regular stops, naps, playtime, potty breaks…well, there’s some truth to that!

To get a “puppy adopted”, but that is not always the case. Many people have very few options when it comes to dog friendly hotels, restaurants, entertainment, etc… but that’s not the case in Greater Williamsburg, Virginia! We’ll even go out on a limb and say that Williamsburg is just as much fun for pups as it is for people (if Sally could talk, she’d agree)!
You may not be able to shop in the buildings and museums, but you can walk your dog around Colonial Williamsburg.
While we didn’t make it to Busch Gardens on this trip, we found out they have dog daycare – so we might have! We will definitely take advantage next time we are in town with Sally!

Even if your child can’t understand the basics, we still think it’s pretty cool that they get to experience the first English-speaking program in America! Pets are not allowed indoors, but leashed pets are allowed anywhere on site!
