Day Trips With Dogs Southern California – Palm Springs, California, is located 100 miles east of Los Angeles in the Coachella Valley region of the Sonoran Desert. A popular resort town for many years, Palm Springs is known for its natural hot springs, hotels, restaurants, golf courses, sunny weather and, of course, dogs.
Downtown Palm Springs continues to grow, with new shops, restaurants, hotels and neighborhoods such as the northern Uptown Design District. The annual Coachella and Stagecoach festivals bring desert cities into the spotlight, and January’s Palm Springs International Film Festival draws big names and a growing number of visitors.

“Greater Palm Springs” includes eight cities in addition to Palm Springs: Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio and Coachella. Tourism is the largest contributor to the local economy. I would recommend staying in Palm Springs and exploring other cities by car. Palm Desert has a beautiful outdoor mall, and Indio/Coachella is perfect for photo ops or if you’re going to a festival (no dogs).

We’ve visited a lot of dog-friendly places, and when I say Palm Springs is the most dog-friendly city we’ve visited, I mean it! It’s hard to explain, but there was always a feeling of welcome wherever we went with Ruby, and hopefully this detailed guide reflects that.
The weather in Palm Springs is undoubtedly beautiful year-round, but there are certain times that are considered the best to visit: winter and early spring. Palm Springs is especially known during the winter months, November through January, when the rest of the country is subject to freezing temperatures and snow, as Palm Springs boasts sunshine and temperatures of 65-75 degrees. .
When traveling to Palm Springs with a dog, I wouldn’t recommend going after March. At least if your only plan is to hit the pool during your visit. Summer temperatures hover around 100℉ and can reach 115℉ with less than 10% humidity.
Living in Palm Springs and the surrounding desert is a real treat and one of my favorite cities to visit. I’m a huge fan of mid-century modern architecture and desert luxury, so I’d be over the moon looking for hotels and home rentals in the area.

If you want to stay in the heart of Palm Springs, Palm Canyon Dr. and Indian Canyon Drs. Which are ideal for walking around shops and restaurants. Check out ARRIVE Palm Springs, Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs, The Colony Palms Hotel & Bungalows and The Saguaro Palm Springs.
If you’d rather rent an apartment—we’re always fans of a kitchen and direct access to the outdoors—then head over to AirBnB or VRBO and turn on the pet feature. Here are some of the homes I have saved on my wish list. The photos below were taken during our weekend stay at Mesa Tavira in Joshua Tree. You can find the full house tour on Instagram.
Palm Springs has always been a dog-loving town, and with 354 days of sunshine a year, there are plenty of places that will welcome your dog with open arms.
Boozehounds Palm Springs was founded by three people for one simple reason…they loved dogs and dreamed of a place where people could take their kids, enjoy a great cocktail or a meal. Be able to, and move around in style. This is the most dog-friendly restaurant we’ve been to for two reasons: 1) the dog menu is top-notch and features fresh ingredients to address common protein allergies, and 2) the dogs are friendly. Dinner is allowed in the atrium, which is ideal. . When visiting during the winter months. We really enjoyed eating here for lunch and you can see our visit on Instagram.

4 Paws Coffee Company This is another dog-themed establishment in Palm Springs. As soon as we walk through the door we are greeted with open arms and the cafe is stocked with dog treats and supplies. At the cafe, we enjoyed pastries and coffee with Ro while she snuggled up with her dog mug. Purchases from the cafe support efforts to support local shelters and support our mission of providing the best coffee, food and connections to the Palm Springs community.
The Murten Botanical Garden is a private arboretum created to share the beauty and incredible diversity of desert plants with all who visit. Desert trees, plants and cacti are found all over the world and range in size from small to very large. The world’s first cacti grow here – my favorite part of the garden – and dogs are off-leash throughout the garden.
Garden Parking S Palm Canyon Dr. Admission is $5 per person, dogs are free. This small garden can be explored in 30 minutes with a leisurely stroll through the area. We spent a little more time here as I was obsessed with taking photos in the cacti. If you come here during the week, you’ll be lucky with a few people.
Something unique to Southern California are fields of wind turbines. They actually have an official visit to Palm Springs for a closer look, but I’m not sure if they allow dogs. We have chosen the path of self-discovery.
Pet Friendly Vacation Spots Across America That Your Dog Will Love
To see behind the scenes, take the Indian Canyon Drive and Garnett turn off I-10. If you are driving north on Indian Canyon, turn left on Garnett and go about 1/4 mile and you will see several places to park. There is very little traffic in this area, so as long as you are not blocking the main road, you can park where you want to shoot.
I would recommend going at sunset. The desert really shines at sunset with cottonwood skies, but the sun sets behind the mountains early, so make sure you arrive before sunset. There are fences around the turbines, but they are not particularly noticeable in the background of the mountains and the surrounding bush. You just have to accept it.
Although there are restrictions on visiting Joshua Tree National Park with your furry friend, there are still dog-friendly activities that allow you to experience the park’s many different sights while visiting with your dog. We’ve visited Ruby many times and have put together the best Joshua Tree itineraries for a half-day or full-day visit to the park.
This mid-century community is a gem for those interested in mid-century modern architecture. Almost every home in Indian Valley was built in the mid-century and had large glass windows, wide porches and ample access to swimming pools. Thanks to its architectural history and stunning and uninterrupted mountain views.
Southern California Cities Among Top 5 For Dogs In America
You may have seen some of these homes on Instagram with their beautiful landscaping and colorful doors. The best way to enjoy these homes is to park and walk the streets. I especially like the condos in South Yosemite and South Camino Real.
The feeling of canine friendliness really comes to life in downtown Palm Springs. It is a vibrant center full of unique shops, restaurants and art. So many people came up to us and thought how well-behaved Ruby was, and all the store owners immediately rushed over to Ruby to offer water and treats to her pets. If you follow us on social media, you know that Ruby has an unknown risk, but was soon offered a pet.
With major thoroughfares including Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive, downtown has plenty to do. I would recommend building a cycle and doing whatever seems interesting. South Palm Canyon is a bit more quaint, while the North End is more modern with recent revitalizations like the Uptown Design District.
Some of the stores on my list include: Ibis Women’s Boutique, Just Fabulous for Palm Springs souvenirs, Peepas, Out West Trading Co, Covet for Durable Jewelry, and Destination PSP. The destination was mid-century home decor at its best in PSP.

Restaurants we liked downtown were Boozehounds, 1501 Uptown Gastropub, Ice Cream and Shop (pe), and Tac/Quila (get the churro ice cream sandwich).
Besides shopping downtown, you can also check out some unique art exhibits scattered around, PS ❤️ like the statues of you and Marilyn Monroe above. If you have time, you can use this guide to find them all.
As you can already tell, Palm Springs has a thriving art scene, and in addition to large, dark sculptures, there are plenty of murals throughout the city. My favorite – the palm salute
