City breaks are not for me (I love small town vacations!), but my two kids love city breaks. While this has been a source of vacation planning controversy for years, I appreciate the cultural attractions, fine dining, and beautiful architecture that the East Coast’s major cities have to offer.

Living in Vermont, we are within a day’s drive of many wonderful towns. Here are our favorite small and large cities for fun (and cheap) East Coast family vacations.
I know I wouldn’t have included two of my favorite cities, New York and Boston. As much as I love them, I think the cities on this list are great for kids.
When it comes to affordability and attracting kids, it’s hard to hold a candle to Washington. Home to the world’s largest museum (which is open to visitors), DC is a vibrant city with enough attractions to keep families busy. a week or so.
Many of Washington’s attractions are located on or near the Washington Mall. Families can climb to the top of the Washington Monument, pay their respects at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and learn about America’s most famous presidents at many monuments.

What do kids like about Washington? Search the International Espionage Museum, see the Lincoln Assassination Show at Ford’s Theater, and visit the pandas at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.
Where to Stay: Avoid the big headache by staying near the National Mall. I promise it’s worth the extra money. With basic amenities and clean rooms, the State Plaza Hotel is within walking distance to all major attractions and is very affordable.
How to travel: If you don’t want to hit the ground running, you can do a lot on your walking tour. The DC metro system is a great way to visit the zoo or travel outside the city.
Recommended Tour: The Hop-on Hop-Off Trolley Tour allows you to see the monuments and museums in person. 15 pages are included and you can buy one day or two days.
Summer Vacation Ideas For Families In 2023
Philadelphia is another major city on the East Coast that proves family vacations are affordable. With tons of free attractions and fun, great museums for the whole family, and some of the best restaurants we’ve visited, Philadelphia should be on every family’s bucket list.
History buffs will want to visit the Liberty Bell (free, but expect long lines), Independence Hall, where the Constitution and Declaration of Independence were signed, and wander around Old Town with its cobblestone streets and 18th Street. charm for many years.
What do kids love about Philadelphia? Younger children will love exploring the exhibits at the Please Touch Museum in the historic Memorial Hall, while older children will enjoy the science exhibits at the Franklin Institute, one of the East Coast’s favorite science museums.
Where to Stay: Philadelphia is made up of several small neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and atmosphere. We didn’t try them all, but we love Fishtown for its walkability and great restaurants. This beautiful, affordable home sleeps five, has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. There is also an outdoor patio with a barbecue.

Getting Around: Philadelphia is one of the most walkable cities in the country, and the diverse neighborhoods and open spaces make the city a joy to explore on foot. You can also buy a day pass to SEPTA, subways/trains, and get to the city’s best sights within a few blocks.
Recommended Tour: For children 12 and older, this Segway tour is a fun way to see some of Philadelphia’s most popular sites. This is a small group tour that takes about two hours.
Atlanta is undoubtedly one of the best family vacation spots on the East Coast, and it’s great for entertaining kids and teens. The city has the world’s largest oceanarium, a famous college football hall, and the famous Coca-Cola factory. But there is more!
Atlanta is a city where you can choose your adventure, and if you really like the outdoors, there are many parks with playgrounds and walking trails. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is located in Piedmont Park and has 30 acres of year-round beauty.

A trip to Atlanta with family favorite Martin Luther King Jr. It wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the National Historical Park. Families can visit the park where King was born, see the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached, and pay their respects at his grave.
What do kids love about Atlanta? Walk around the Ring Fountain in Centennial Park, visit one of America’s oldest zoos, and catch a Broadway show at the historic Fox Theater.
Where to Stay: The Courtland Grand Hotel has indoor and outdoor pools and an excellent patio restaurant. Minutes to Centennial Park or the Georgia Aquarium.
Getting around: The MARTA system offers easy access to downtown and downtown, but we’ve found driving, driving, or Uber work best.

Roanoke isn’t a big city, so it might not be the best place to call a family on the East Coast, but honestly, it’s one of the first cities I would encourage parents to look for something different.
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains (just off the Blue Ridge Highway!), Roanoke is a great outdoor town. The city has 55 parks, as well as eight recreation centers, five public parks, two public swimming pools and two dog parks.
Families can visit the daily outdoor farmers market, Roanoke’s iconic star on Mill Hill, and Roanoke’s impressive Taubman Museum of Art, which is free admission every day of the week and houses eleven galleries of American contemporary art. .

What do kids like in Roanoke? Center on the Square is an arts and culture center that includes the Roanoke Pinball Museum, the Kids Square Museum, and the West Virginia Museum of Science.

Burlington, Vermont is a very special place! It’s a great city for families – not too big, with a great walkable downtown, and amazing views of Lake Champlain.
Burlington is home to the University of Vermont, the famous Church Street Market, and a population of about 42,000. It is a mecca for beer and coffee lovers, foodies and shoppers, and has been named the healthiest city in the United States several times.
One of the best ways to see this beautiful city on the shores of Lake Champlain is from the water, or close to it.
The paved Burlington Greenway runs eight miles along the water, connecting several wonderful parks and recreation areas, including Burlington’s waterfront, North Beach and Leddy Park. Rent a bike from Local Motion and ride all day around the lake, stopping for a swim when it’s too hot.
