Known as one of the most dog-friendly cities in the US, Alexandria, VA does not disappoint. We spent most of our time in Old Town, a very walkable area with interesting museums, restaurants and shopping. With dog bowls on King Street and dogs on every corner, Charlie couldn’t be more comfortable. There is also a free trolley that travels along the long pedestrianized (or trolley…) King Street through the Old Town and past over 200 restaurants and shops.
To get started, visit VisitAlexandriaVA.com or visit the Alexandria Visitor Center, located at 221 King Street in the heart of Old Town, full of recommendations and can help you plan your perfect trip. House Museum & Park, Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, The Lyceum: Alexandria Historical Museum, George Washington’s Mount Vernon and 40% off coupon. Definitely call the museum to find out how pet friendly the museum is, but we had no problem with Charlie’s bag below.
There are 18 public dog parks in Alexandria (not including a bunch of private parks), and while I haven’t visited them all, Founders Park is highly recommended and is on the Alexandria harbor/waterfront (a must-see). With views of the Potomac River, it’s a great place to walk the trails or run in the grass with your pup. You can book a boat ride with the Potomac Riverboat Company, which offers a variety of cruises, including dog-friendly 60-minute canine cruises on select days from May through September. If you like a picnic in the park, the Windmill Hill Park and Community Fair is highly recommended.

If you’re looking for a great seafood-friendly option on the water, Vola’s Dockside Grill is located in front of the Torpedo Factory Arts Center in Alexandria Harbor and is a great place to sit outside and people watch the boats leaving the marina. .
Overlooking the port of Alexandria, this former World War II munitions factory now houses 82 working artist studios. From oil paintings, pottery, and jewelry, it’s a great showcase at local art galleries, where the work is for sale and dogs of all sizes are welcome! Personally, I love creative spaces like this and I think they add so much energy to the community that they are a part of. Especially when they are open to the public (including dogs) and free entry.
Any place with bottled poison and dragon blood in cabinets from the late 1700s is worth a visit. Located in Old Town, one block from the Visitor Center, it is an apothecary and brewing room that operated from 1792-1933. Even the contents of the original jar!
Carlyle House is a historic mansion owned by a wealthy merchant named John Carlyle. You can visit the 1753 John Carlyle House, whose home was the center of Alexandria’s social and political scene in the 18th century. It was the beach, but we found and stretched several blocks before the shore near the water filled up. At that time, we realized that many children were underage.

Located at 480 King Street in Old Town, on the same street as the visitor center and shopping strip, this location couldn’t be more prime! This charming boutique hotel is colorful with funky decor and comfortable rooms. Named after the city’s founders, John and Philip Alexander, the lobby welcomes you with blue velvet sofas and a complimentary coffee and tea station. The best part is that it’s mega pet friendly, because for most of you dog owners that usually means an extra $100-$150 charge, but Alexandrian charges an extra $25 to bring your fur baby!
While I agree there is a lot to explore outside of the Old City, we were only in the city for 2 days. There is so much to do, the Old Town has great attractions, restaurants and shopping, I don’t want to rush our time, but two worth visiting are:
