He was right. This mountain town has something for everyone. All people and their unique interests are welcome in Asheville. Whether you’re an adventure lover, a foodie, or a lover of history and culture, you’ll feel right at home in this thriving North Carolina city.

Your pets are also welcome. Like my poodle, Andy felt the same during his last stay.

I grew up near Asheville, North Carolina, but in the last nine years I’ve visited Asheville more than anywhere else in the state. Our poodle Andy has been there with us for the past two years. Traveling with a dog is similar to traveling with children in some ways. Both require a little extra work, but unlike little people, dogs can’t go everywhere with you or sleep in all your dorms. That’s why it’s important for pet owners to know before booking a trip that your four-legged family members are welcome too.

Asheville is known as one of the most pet-friendly cities in the US. I think this is an accurate description of this city. Sometimes during my visits I saw many dogs walking people in the streets. The Aloft Hotel in downtown Asheville is, in my opinion, recognized as one of the most pet-friendly hotels in the state of North Carolina.

Aloft Downtown Asheville has a popular pet adoption program that allows a rescue dog to stay at the hotel until it finds a forever home. The program was so successful that it was piloted at other Aloft hotels in the United States. With your “lobby dog” as a hotel greeter, your dog will also feel like the best dog or best cat. correct I said cat too. When it comes to pet policy, the hotel does not discriminate against cats. Cats and dogs stay in the building free of charge. Cats, as you might imagine, are not as outspoken as dogs, but this time Andy encountered a feline visitor during his stay. If you have cat allergies or any animal allergies, please discuss this with the office prior to check-in.

I was first at the Aloft Asheville downtown on Biltmore Avenue a few years ago. My daughter, who was five years old at the time, fell in love with the hotel lobby reception program. Every year he insisted that we go to the lobby of the Aloft Hotel and see who we could adopt before living there. In fact, I have stayed at this hotel for years because of its prime location in Asheville’s South Neighborhood. Will and I are craft beer lovers and this is where we spend most of our time in Asheville. The Aloft Asheville is within walking distance of all of downtown Asheville’s attractions. The Biltmore District is a quick drive away.

Nightly rates at this Aloft location may seem higher than what you’re used to at other Aloft hotels in different areas. That’s because demand for hotels in Asheville is generally very high, especially downtown. In fact, on high weekends, a room at the Aloft Asheville Downtown can cost travelers $400 to $500 a night. Marriott members like me get a small discount on these rates because of brand loyalty.

Many hotels charge a pet fee when traveling with pets, but not at the Aloft Downtown Asheville. All pets are free at this property. Parking is also available on the terrace below the hotel for a small fee of US$10 per day.

Not only are pets not allowed at Aloft Downtown Asheville, but outdoor areas are not. At the Aloft Asheville, you can get snacks and drinks in the WXYZ Lounge and your dog can be with you. It really makes you feel at home when you stay there. I really liked it and I think Andy did too.

Aloft Asheville is so pet-friendly that it sometimes hosts fun events for dogs and their owners. Many hotel guests love their pets so staying at this hotel is a pleasure.

In July, during my last visit, I discovered that a woman had a dog just like my Andy at home. He missed his dog. I also met a couple from New Jersey with a dog named Opie. I told them that “Opie and Andy” was good enough for North Carolina. Fans of Andy Griffith’s TV series will certainly understand why.
