To find out more about London’s hidden treasures for kids, I caught up with family travel blogger Katja Gaskell, who is raising a family in the UK after years abroad. Katja shares some of her favorite things to do in London with the kids here, and lots more on the great family travel site Globetotting.com (which has tons of tips).
Sure, you can get a great view of the capital from The Shard, London’s tallest building, or the London Eye… but it will cost you. Book Sky Garden tickets for a room with a (free) view at the Walkie-Talkie building in the city’s financial district.
A landscaped public garden and 360-degree views of the city greet you on the first and third floors. Admission is free, but you must book your tickets online in advance. Find out more here: https://skygarden.london/.
Take a tour of Borough Market, London’s oldest food market. Located in the area near London Bridge, the market has been here for the past 1,000 years. Today, Borough Market is London’s most popular food destination, with around 4.5 million visitors passing through its bustling stalls each year.

Fresh fruit and vegetable stalls, family fishermen and butchers run dozens of street food stalls. From German sausage sandwiches and Spanish paella to freshly baked oysters and empanadas from Argentina, there’s enough food to keep everyone in the family happy. Borough Market is not for tourists, it opens for wholesale at 2pm and is open to the public from 10am. Find out more at: http://boroughmarket.org.uk/.
Head south of London and you’ll find yourself in the capital’s Jurassic Park. Crystal Palace Park has 30 life-size models of dinosaurs that were first introduced in 1854. Designed by sculptor and naturalist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, these large sculptures were created using the most modern scientific knowledge of the time. .
Some dinosaurs look very strange today, but back then they were world premieres and very popular. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were apparently interested in this dinosaur exhibit and were regular visitors to the park. More information: https://cpdinosaurs.org/.
London is one of the greenest cities in the world, with thousands of parks, many with excellent playgrounds. In Kensington Gardens, there is a Princess Diana Memorial Playground based on the story of Peter Pan.

At Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, you’ll find the Tumbling Bay playground, which features rock pools, sand and treehouses connected by an inflatable bridge and pulley system. The park has an amusement park with swings, a large sandbox and a huge climbing wall.
One of our favorite playgrounds is Highgate Woods in North London. Packed with fun things to do for kids of all ages and surrounded by woodland, it’s a local favourite. Other places to swing and skate include Corams Fields, Brockwell Park and Victoria Park.
If you’re looking to give your urban offspring a taste of the countryside, you’re in luck, London has some great farms. Located on the east side of town, these farms are home to horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and many other animals that can be found on any farm in the countryside.
Among the 32 hectares of greenery on the Isle of Dogs, Madchut Farm is a working farm and nursery with a range of educational activities. It’s the largest urban farm in Europe and has over 100 animals, including llamas! For more information, visit: https://www.mudchute.org/.

Another option is Hackney City Farm, located on a former brewery. At weekends, children can join the Mini Farm Club and help with the mowing. The farm plays an important role in the community and has many courses and a farm shop. Find out more here: https://hackneycityfarm.co.uk/.
One of my favorite things about living in North London is Hampstead Pond. Covering 790 acres, the beautiful Hampstead Heath has three pools: a mixed pool, a men’s pool and a Kenwood women’s pool. People have been bathing here for decades, and little has changed over the years.
Kids eight and up can swim in the water (be careful, the water is cold!), and younger kids will have fun running around the pool. Find out more: https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/
Take a break between scenes with a scoop of ice cream. London is home to some really fun and experimental ice cream shops with weird and wonderful flavours. At Chin Chin Labs, nitrogen freezers are used to produce gourmet ice cream, and at Udderlicious, customers vote for the flavor of the month. Past flavors include Marmite and Chocolate, Ginger Beer Sorbet and Brexit Mess!

Other favorites include Ruby Violet, a magical shop where their ice cream is made in small batches using creative ingredients, and Gelatorino, a type of gelato Italians are proud of.
Hard to believe, I know, but sometimes the weather in London is good. Not only is the weather nice, but the city can be hot! It’s guaranteed that no one in the family will want to wander around the museum when Mercury rises.
Then head to one of London’s best parks. The most popular playground for young children is the Princess Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens. Next to the wooden pirate ship is a small pad where you can play for hours.
Another favorite place for my four year old is the fountains at Granary Square in Kings Cross. He’s not alone, on sunny summer days the square is full of families enjoying something close to London’s seafront.
Things To Do With Kids In London That The Whole Family Will Enjoy
My favorite park is the Fountain Room at Southbank. Walls of water rise and fall randomly, creating ever-changing and evolving “rooms” as children move in and out. Don’t forget to bring a spare! Find out more here: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/
In 1664, the Russian ambassador presented a pelican squadron to King Charles II. He was given a home in St. James’s Park, where his pelican offspring have remained ever since. In 2013, Prague City Council decided that London really needed a few pelicans when the old guard, the Eastern White Pelican, was taken away. They can be seen feeding at the eastern end of the park’s lagoon daily between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. More details: https://www.royalparks.org.uk/.
