If you want to be more outdoorsy, why not get your own lap camp? Bring your four-legged friend to one of our fantastic camps! Julian Price Camp, Flintlock Camp, Grandpa Camp and Blue Bear Mountain Camp are pet friendly! We love skiing as a family and empty nesters. In this post, we’ll share some tips for skiing at Sugar Mountain. We ski at Sugar Mountain Resort in North Carolina. We started going when our children were in elementary school and have since become a family with our grown children.

Neil and I also enjoy skiing with us (and our dog, Daisy, who sleeps in the condo while we ski).

If possible, drive a four-wheel drive vehicle because you will be driving on snow. You will drive up and down mountain roads on your way to the apartment. But they do a great job cleaning and salting the roads.

We have rented apartments from several different people and have had great experiences with each of them. We even took our dog who slept in the apartment all day while we skied.

Nc Cabin Rentals

We have rented for several years in the bee branch. The advantage is that you can ski in (right on Easy Street) which is great for family members and their condo trips. One year we rented two apartments that had a private hallway that made it easy to get back and forth.

For the past two years, Neil and I (just the two of us at the time) rented an apartment in Briar Cliff. We went to Sugar Mountain Ski Resort and rented a locker at the resort to store our skis, poles, ski boots and helmet. They are sweet and very friendly, so Daisy can go with us. He is a good traveler and sleeps in the apartment all day while we go skiing.

Most condos and homes have fireplaces, so you can bring in wood or purchase wood from your local store or Lowes in Banner Elk. It’s a little expensive to buy, but it’s good to help the local economy. We usually use two batches a night.

We have frozen meals and soups in a large refrigerator for lunch and dinner, so you don’t have to eat out, saving you money and time. After a long day of skiing, we shower, put on our pajamas and enjoy a good home-cooked meal.

One night we had pizza at a delicious pizza place in Banner Elk called Bella’s. We also like to eat at Banner Elk Tavern.

Make sure you have warm and waterproof clothing as there is sometimes a mix of rain and snow. I found out, I didn’t have a warm waterproof ski coat.

Also take a few pairs of ski gloves or dry them overnight if the apartment has a dryer. It’s a shame to start the day with wet gloves. (Some apartments have washers and dryers, some don’t.)

I recommend taking ski socks as well. Ski boots have no support, ski socks are designed for a slightly tight fit, warm and comfortable skiing.

Don’t forget ski goggles or at least good sunglasses. I actually prefer glasses on a cold day and sunglasses on a warm day.

If you are going to and from the resort, I recommend some snow boots or at least waterproof shoes. You will be walking through snow and in many cases muddy water and mud.

You can rent all the equipment at Sugar Mountain Resort, which we do. To save time, I recommend renting equipment for the day or night before the first day of skiing. The lines can be very long in the morning and you will miss your skiing time. We rent the following goods:

You must also purchase daily roof/lift tickets. They can be purchased at 20:00 or before the start of skiing. They don’t let you buy more than one day at a time.

Pet Friendly Cottages & Rooms

You can apply for skiing at the resort if you don’t know what kind of skiing I would recommend, especially for adults. Kids learn faster, especially if the adults in your party know how to ski. We taught our girls two rides on Easy Street (beginner trails). After that, they looked positive.

If you are driving or skiing (or not staying in a ski/ski-out house or condo), I recommend renting a cabin. It allows overnight storage of skis, poles, ski boots, helmets, etc. Carrying all this equipment in your car or apartment is a lot of work.

If you rent a locker, we provide plastic bags to cover your ski boots overnight (see photo below). This will prevent water from the helmet and skis from getting into the night boots. Walking in wet boots the next morning is miserable.

We also have a boot dryer (and a glove and hat dryer if you don’t have a clothes dryer in your apartment). That evening we rented our gear, our boots were wet and dried them in the dryer.

Winter Things To Do

You can also buy night ski/lift tickets. We did this once as a family and it was so much fun! Still, it’s nice to come back to our apartment and relax, especially for us middle-aged people.
