New York To Maine The Perfect Dog Friendly 5 Day Road Trip Itinerary

Rachel Johnson and her husband Nate founded 2 Traveling Dogs in 2011. They write The Daily Dog, which highlights the RV adventures of rescue dogs Peanut Butter Brickley and Digby Pancake as they travel across the United States to rescue animals. With over a million followers on social media, they use their platforms to inspire others to adopt their pets and live their best lives while traveling together!

Both mountain range and ocean views can be seen as you drive northeast in your RV! Big cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia also offer a slice of history and culture. This area really has it all, but like no other area we’ve visited, Brickle and Digby are our favorite dog-friendly places in the Northeast.

The Northeast region of the United States consists of eleven states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The Northeast has a diverse climate with very cold winters. But summer is a great hike to visit the area, and the colors of the fall leaves will remind you of being outside with the dogs.

Our favorite part of the trip is the food and this area has everything from Boston Baked Beans, Wild Blueberries, Stew, Bread and Apples! Our dogs Brickle and Digby definitely have their favorites! We could share a blueberry pie in Maine!

Dog Friendly North East Holiday Cottages

Connecticut has more than 19 acres on the banks of the Mystic River. Mystic Seaport is the largest maritime museum in the United States. But it really is a park! Walk your dog and look at the amazing old boats and learn about the seafaring lifestyle that was common in this part of New England. Pets must be on a leash and are welcome in all outdoor areas. Pets are also welcome to join the shore cruise you speak with if the tour size allows a dog on board! Choose RV resorts in the area that offer water views and are dog friendly!

Delaware is the second smallest state in the country, but it also offers five beautiful state parks for camping! We enjoyed Killen’s Pond State Park near Felton, Delaware. Killen’s Pond is a great place for kayaking, canoeing, paddling or paddling, and walking around the pond with your dog! Killens Pond State Park Campground has 59 single family campsites with electric and water hookups that are dog-friendly.

You may have heard of my popular bar port. But have you heard of Bass Harbor? Years after our visit, we can’t stop talking about this destination. Bass Harbor, Maine is located on the “back” side of the Mount Desert, where much of Acadia National Park is located. It is located in the southwestern part of the island. Our favorite hike for the dogs was from Bass Harbor Campground to Bass Harbor Head Light! It is located in the park southeast of the port. It is one of the most photographed and recognized lighthouses in the United States. We still remember the sounds of water, boys and birds. We really felt it. After picking wild blueberries and eating pie, this hike was perfect. Don’t forget that Acadia National Park has over 100 miles of trails that are open to dogs!

Cape Cod in Massachusetts is truly an experience. Cape Cod is a peninsula in the United States of Massachusetts. It’s a popular summer destination, but visiting in the off-season is a great way to beat the traffic. Quaint villages, lighthouses, ponds and coves, and ocean beaches are your and your dog’s playground. We love visiting the great city of Hyannis and looking out over the harbor. We decided to take the dog friendly ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard for ice cream! Not all dogs have their sea legs, so be prepared! Camping in your RV on Cape Cod gives you the perfect home base for many destinations in Massachusetts. You can choose rural or more expensive resort options.

There’s only one way to get to this island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, and that’s by boat. Smith Island is located about 12 miles off the coast of Crisfield, Maryland. Head to the Crisfield City Pier and hop on one of the cruise ships that operate here. Your dog will love the wind in their fur on this 45 minute ride! However, Brickle is not very eager to ride. All dogs are different. Tell your dog that this island was first charted in 1608 by Captain John Smith! No more than 200 inhabitants lived here, many of whom speak the original dialect. Take the time to walk the streets of the entire island and see the simple way of life. Don’t forget to sample the Smith Island Cake, the official state cake of Maryland. Most people or dogs can’t say they’ve been here. It is truly an adventure you will never forget.

The White Mountain National Forest in eastern New Hampshire ranges from mountain hardwood forests to majestic alpine peaks. Experience stunning scenery, clear mountain lakes and streams, wildlife and year-round outdoor recreation opportunities with your dog! When most people think of New Jersey, they don’t think of rural areas and farms. But Sussex, New Jersey will make you look at this state differently! Located in the rural mountains of northwestern New Jersey, Pleasant Acres Campground offers guests camping in a farm-like atmosphere! Hayrides and farm animal tricks are just the beginning. Our dogs loved seeing the farm animals and wading in the river. Plus, a dog-friendly hike is just down the road at High Point State Park. The park is located in northern New Jersey and has the highest elevation in the state. You can see New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania above! If you get tired of country life, the Big Apple is only a short drive away. Get the best of both worlds in your cowboy boots.

Have you ever heard of Qingshua Bridge? You will never forget seeing it and walking along the glass floor. Our dogs are certainly not forgotten! Kinzoa Bridge State Park is a 339-acre (137 ha) Pennsylvania state park near Jewett Mountain. Kinzua Bridge State Park was selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of Parks as one of the “25 Must-Visit Pennsylvania State Parks.”

When it was built in 1882, the Kinzua Bridge was the tallest railroad bridge in the world at 301 feet. The site, which still houses part of the original elevated railway, is a fascinating place to walk. Visitors and their dogs can climb 600 feet up the remaining support towers, look down into the Kinzua Valley, and look out onto a half-glass platform at the end of the trail.

Our time in Rhode Island was short but memorable. Take back time on a rock walk with your dog in Newport, Rhode Island. The Cliff Walk on Newport’s East Coast is world-renowned as a public walkway that combines the natural beauty of Newport’s coastline with Newport’s Gilded Age architectural history. The 3.5-mile winding trail offers panoramic views of the horizon, where the Atlantic Ocean crashes against jagged cliffs and the surf splashes against the weathered cliffs below. Dogs are allowed on leashes.
