The Midwest is an area of the United States known as “America’s Heartland”. We can definitely say that traveling through the Midwest with our dogs, Brickell and Digby, touched our hearts!
Friendly people, good food and a simple life are what we remember about our time in the Midwest. The spaciousness, open spaces, room to roam and relaxed lifestyle make our dogs comfortable and relaxed. We found the Midwest to be very friendly to dogs and their people.
Although the Midwestern United States is mostly flat, it has many other landforms with varying elevations. You will find rolling hills, high mountains, plains, plains and large lakes. Along with the beauty of nature, you’ll also find some history lessons waiting for you and your dog!

Rich in history and the site of Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home, Lincoln State Park features more than 10 miles of hiking trails, rolling hills and two lakes. Dogs are welcome to explore this state park with you. You can visit the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Pioneer Farms, the site of Lincoln’s cabin, the grave of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, and the historic Twelfth Stone Trail. Want to stay all day? You can camp in this state park! It is great for an overnight stay.
If the covered bridge brings to mind a famous movie, you know why this county in Iowa is a unique place to visit. Your dog is welcome to join you on the many covered bridges in this area of Iowa. Madison County is the covered bridge capital of Iowa. This county has the largest covered bridge in one area! There are several bridges that are accessed by dirt roads, so leave the RV back at the campground while you explore.
In over six years of traveling with pets in an RV, when I think of the one place that surprised me the most, it was the claws at the bottom of a chalk pyramid in Kansas. Not many tourists know about this place, but now the secret is out! On the western edge of Gove County in Kansas is Monument Rocks. It is a series of giant, chalk monoliths known as the Chalk Pyramids. Dogs are allowed on leash and you will feel like you are on another planet. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
A Guide To Dog Friendly National Parks: Pt. Two
Being from Florida, we love being at the beach! But after visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Brickell and Digby, I now understand lake life! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features miles of sandy beaches and bluffs that tower over Lake Michigan. As with many areas, there are some beaches where dogs are not allowed, so check with friendly park staff, get a map or look online. We found Brickell and Digby to be much more than we expected in this beautiful lakeside location. But remember that dogs are not allowed on the mound for safety reasons.
Your dog will feel as tall as Paul Bunyan when you travel to Bemidji, Minnesota! This was a fun stop for us on our trip. Meet the giant statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox for a great photo opportunity. This roadside object has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. Built in 1937, Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox Babe stand on the shores of Lake Bemidji near the Tourist Information Center. After getting the best picture of your pooch, head to nearby, dog-friendly Itasca State Park. Here, you can view, hike, and picnic along the banks of the upper Mississippi River!
Named for the large sandstone cave in the park, Indian Cave State Park borders the mighty Missouri River. Your dog will thank you for taking him here to camp, picnic and hike over 22 miles of trails! Indian Cave is the main geological feature of the park and contains prehistoric Native American petroglyphs! Be sure to keep your dog on a leash and clean up afterward to preserve this beautiful site.
Usually, we avoid big cities on our RV trips because our dog is old. But we have a great balance of city and exoticism in Missouri’s Gateway Arch National Park. Two magnificent buildings in this 91-acre park will take your breath away. Your dog will love walking through the green grass and parks, watching the horse and carriage rides, and relaxing with a picnic. Dogs on leashes can explore the park and walk along the riverfront trail.

We love the roadside attractions and unique sights, and the dog-friendly Frontier Village really makes us want to check out our surroundings! Original buildings from a North Dakota frontier village were brought to the site. The displays filled with unique antiques and artifacts are a great way to learn about North Dakota and its history. If you’re looking for the world’s largest buffalo monument, you’ve found it! Close to Frontier Village, visit this special spot for pictures. You can not resist!
The park is a beautiful haven for native plants and wildlife, and your dog is welcome to explore this national park’s more than 100 miles of trails with you. Is Cuyahoga Valley National Park dear to my heart? There is a winery inside the park! Yes, the winery is dog friendly! After hiking and exploring, sit under the trees at Sarah’s Vineyard with your dog. As with any park, check national park pet restrictions before you go.
Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park and wildlife preserve in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Custer State Park is famous for its bison herds, scenic drives, historic sites, resorts and campgrounds. It was named one of the top ten world wildlife destinations for the range of wildlife within our park boundaries. Just 15 miles from the city of Custer, this state park is vast and inspiring!
I still remember the way Digby looked at me as we stood on the shore of Apostle Island. The wind blows, the sun shines, and all is well in our traveling world. Dogs are welcome to explore this Wisconsin property with you. You will see windswept beaches and sandstone cliffs. Walk your dog and experience the magic of Lake Superior.

Dog Friendly Carmel, Indiana
For the crust, combine all the ingredients and let rise in a warm place for an hour. Roll out the dough and spread it inside a greased, cast iron or pizza pan plate. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake the crust for 15 minutes and remove from the oven. Place the cheese and toppings on top of the crust and spoon the tomato sauce mixture over it. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes. Allow your dog to cool completely before serving.
