Our puppy Lincoln has been traveling with us since 2019 and this is a big part of why we love traveling. Simply put, sitting in a car is the most accessible way for us to travel (and we take the Lincoln everywhere).

So we brainstormed our travel catalog and combined this trip with Lincoln’s bucket list. If you’re looking for dog-friendly travel ideas because you have a dog that wants to do everything you do while traveling, this is for you!
Lincoln takes you on this trip to New England because summer and fall temperatures are great, there are plenty of outdoor activities, and you’ll find one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the United States.

This itinerary is similar to our Wicked Good: 10-Day Northeast Road Trip, but includes only the most important stops and tips for taking your dog with you!
During the summer, take advantage of the longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures found in many other states at this time of year. You can also take a road trip in the fall to admire the spectacular fall foliage in one of the best leaf-viewing places in the world.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during the 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long weekend camping on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY in mid-to-mid. late August, a month in Campton, Ellsworth, NH in September, weeks in , ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
It really wasn’t a bad time to be in New England during those months. Sure, the nights can get warm during the summer months, but make sure your rental has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we say this as people who live in Texas, so our tolerance for heat is probably higher than those who live year-round up north. That being said, we don’t do anything without air conditioning. , so in that sense our tolerance is probably very low, ha!)

However, we would say that if you want to plan your trip for spectacular fall foliage, aim for the second week of October. Although places well known for their vegetation will be crowded (such as Concamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the views will be worth it!
RTL Tip: Want more time to walk or swim while traveling? Go in July or August. Fancy a relaxing walk through the fall leaves with a hot cider in your hand? Visit in October. Want cooler temperatures but fewer crowds? Visit in September.
Lincoln is definitely a fan of trips we can go on because it makes it infinitely easier for him to be with us. If you are close enough to any point on this tour to drive, we recommend doing so. Continue to the next point on this route and complete the full loop home.
However, if you can’t get here by car and you have a dog that can travel by plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up your rental car when you land. If you’re flying, we recommend changing your itinerary and traveling from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend treating this tour like a traditional road trip, with a different stop at each stop. You can check out campsites near each destination or stay overnight in nearby towns.
When it comes to Lincoln, NH, consider camping on the Pemi River, Lost River Valley, or the city of Lincoln. (Can’t find anything in Lincoln? Look in Kempton, New Jersey, just 20 miles south. We had a great month at the Red Sleigh Cabin in Kempton.)
For Lake Placid, consider Rollins Pond Campground, Ausable Chasm Campground, or Lake Placid Village. (Want a truly spectacular view? Look for accommodations in the village of Lake Placid
Alternatives To Flying With Your Pet — And How To Keep Them Safe When You Can’t Avoid It
Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake Inn offers dog-friendly rooms and a restaurant with a dog-friendly patio. Can’t find anything in Lake Placid? (Try near Wilmington.)
For Stowe, consider Smugglers Notch State Park Campground or the town of Stowe. (You can also check it out in Burlington, about 40 minutes away. Downtown Burlington is very dog friendly!)
For Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, take the Blue Hill Mountains hike at sunset. It’s beautiful, dog-friendly, and 1/100th the scenery of Acadia. Compete!) .
Lincoln (not to be confused with our dog of the same name) is gorgeous in the middle of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. That’s why it’s a great place to start your dog-friendly adventure.
The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In New England
You could easily spend a week exploring this part of New Hampshire, as there are plenty of dog-friendly hiking trails and attractions nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t do and see everything on our list!)
But since we only gave you one day to enjoy the White Mountains on this trip, here are our top tips for the best things to do.
This is a bonus because you can take the Cancamagus Highway on your way from Portland to Lincoln. (Refer back to this section each time you take a trip. Unless you’re making a full loop on this trip, drive back and forth on the Concamagus Highway during your stay. (Consider getting to Lincoln in about two hours.)
If you’re heading here in the fall, the Cancamagus Highway will be one of the most scenic stretches of your entire trip. And if you don’t go this fall, that’s what will happen
The 27 Best Places In Maine To Go With Your Dog
The Concamagus Highway is a 54-mile stretch between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. This is one of the most popular trails in New Hampshire and one of the best places in the United States to view fall foliage. Although there are many viewpoints and trails along this scenic road that could take up your entire trip, we recommend stopping at only a few viewpoints and refraining from hiking this route. (Better ones are coming!) Note: Are you going this fall? wake up early This road gets busy quickly, so either go the night before or call ahead to avoid long lines and heavy traffic at your next destination. The Concamagus Highway is great, but it definitely isn’t the only highlight of the day!
We will get you and your puppy out of the car and into the forest! Hiking was the busiest activity during our month in New Hampshire. We searched every weekend and many weeks. Spending time outdoors hiking is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can see all of our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend heading to Welch-Duckey Mountain. This approximately 7.4km loop is a great half-day hike with mountain views. It’s dog friendly, provides good exercise and lots of fun if you like varied terrain between exposed rocks and forest paths.
If you are looking for this hike through All Trails, search for the Welch-Duckey Loop Trail (not “Welch Mountain Rock Ledge” or “Welch and Dickey Mountains”). As you traverse the entire loop, you’re sure to see the cliff edge

Both Welch and Dickey Mountain. We recommend walking counterclockwise to be able to climb up the steepest section. (This is especially useful if it’s wet or you’re visiting during the fall season when leaves are on the ground. Take your time, the area can be slippery.)
Dog friendly? absolutely Everything on this tour was approved by Lincoln (the dog)! Just remember that this hike has some steep, rocky sections.
