On A Cruise With Your Pet: Pet Friendly Cruise Ships

One of the most dog-friendly islands off the coast of Queensland, especially in the tropics, is Great Keppel Island. A day trip to Great Keppel with your dog from Yeppoon is a great day out with stunning beaches, swimming and snorkeling. There is so much to do on the Big Keppel Island!

The easiest way to get to Great Keppel Island is by boat. Two ferry companies offer a short 30-minute trip and several full-day trips. Advance reservations are recommended.

We traveled with Keppel Konnections, which allows dogs on board for free. There was no need for our dog to have a muzzle. There are also several Freedom Fast Cats that charge $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs.

The main attraction of Great Keppel (Wop-pa) Island is its beautiful beaches, which are lucky to be dog friendly. There are no signs on the beaches stating whether or not dogs are allowed. But the island is part of the same government district as Yeppoon, so there should also be rules that can not be used with dogs during the day and the use before 8am and after 4pm.

Fisherman’s Beach: the center of the island, this is where the boat will take you, close to a limited number of shops, restaurants and accommodation on the island. Walk to the beach at its southern end to start the walking path that leads to the nearby beaches.

Shelving Beach: The next easiest beach to visit is a 5-10 minute walk from the end of Fishermans Beach, although the last part of the road is a bit steep, especially if you are wearing a belt. It is popular for swimming and snorkeling, with reefs extending on both sides of the beach.

Monkey Beach: Considered one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, head off from Shelving Beach and take the long walk to Monkey Beach. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit this beach.

Long Beach: This beautiful stretch of white sand is great for paddling and swimming with dogs. There are two walkways to the beach, the easiest to find is one that starts at the end of Fishermans Beach and the other that leads inland beyond the waste of the island. The eastern end is actually a nudist beach, although when we were there we had almost the entire beach to ourselves.

Best Dog Friendly Hotels & Places To Stay In Florida

There are many hiking trails on the island, although they are not well maintained or marked at present. It’s best to keep your dog on a leash while walking as we saw a goanna, an echidna and many birds in the peaceful forest. If you live on the island, it is recommended that you notify the property if you plan to go to the forest.

As part of our cruise with Keppel Konnections we added a lunch including a drink at the Great Keppel Island Hideaway which was lovely and delicious. The bistro at Hideaway is mostly outdoors, dog friendly, and offers a wide selection of drinks. As I was leaving, I noticed a sign that said “no dogs allowed here,” but I’m not sure which section it refers to – we weren’t the only ones with a dog.

Other eateries on the island include Tropical Vibes Cafe in the main mall and Great Keppel Island Pizza. Both options seem to be dog friendly with tables outside, or take out and go to the beach.

If you’re just visiting for the day and want to spend the day exploring, it’s best to bring your own tour so you don’t have to return to Fishermans Beach in the middle of the day.

Although the main center of the island, Great Keppel, has been closed for many years, and renovation plans are announced every few years (and then closed), there are many other places to stay and holiday homes. on the island.

Most aren’t pet-friendly, but there are probably one or two pet-friendly options available at any given time, like this beach house on Airbnb. It is best to book in advance or just go on a day trip to Great Keppel Island with your dog.

Another main island in tropical Queensland worth visiting with your dog is Magnetic Island, just a 20-minute boat ride off the coast of Townsville.
